Heading Home is committed to serving all people experiencing homelessness. This is a photo of our ABQ StreetConnect (ABQSC) client (referred to as Frank) and Frank’s Outreach Navigator, Mike.
ABQSC, a program within Heading Home’s array of programs, provides prioritized outreach to people like Frank who would otherwise be unable to access community resources because of severe medical and/or behavioral challenges such as schizophrenia, dementia, substance use, or a combination of multiple diagnoses. Frank experienced homelessness for over ten years and during that time, he became a high utilizer of emergency services. This meant that Frank was in and out of urgent care centers, hospitals, and was responsible for the unnecessary redirection of emergency response teams such as police and rescue workers. These services and their corresponding cost to the taxpayers is significant because the solution to homelessness is housing – a much more cost-effective approach to helping people like Frank than leaving them in a state of homelessness. Before getting connected with Heading Home and the ABQSC team in February, Frank had few options for his path to recovery.
In spite of the impacts brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mike has continued to support Frank and successfully transitioned him into housing in June. Heading Home and the ABQSC team is dedicated to serving people experiencing homelessness, like Frank, to help them navigate their own individual journeys toward housing.
