If there is one thing that connects Belén and Erice it is positivity. While the two have only met virtually so far, their smiles are infectious and jump right off a computer screen.
Belén’s mom, Carla enrolled her in the program because she wanted another positive role model for her young adopted daughter. Belén had been waiting for a Big Sister since last September, and thanks to Match Makers, the BBBS staff was able to match her with Big Sister Erice in late June.
Erice was looking for a way to get more involved in her local community and told us she wanted to make a positive impact after seeing so much negativity on the news and in her city. After learning more about BBBS at a virtual orientation, she felt that this was the perfect opportunity to give back.
The new match hit it off immediately. After an hour of talking the two were still going strong and Belén didn’t want to stop, but Erice promised they would pick right back up where they left off in one week for their next virtual outing. Throughout the call, Erice was nothing but smiles and encouraged Belén to keep having fun and playing around, even if sometimes she didn’t stay in the camera frame.
On the agenda for a future meeting is a discussion about the Black Lives Matter movement, which is something that Carla was hoping her daughter’s Big would be able to address and openly talk to her about. Since Belén is biracial, Carla wanted her daughter to have a Big of color. She was so happy when BBBS helped bring Erice into their lives and hopes that not only will her daughter have someone else who she can bond with, but she'll also get the chance to learn and connect with her culture.
Erice and Belén are both looking forward to seeing each other in person, discovering all they have in common and how they can explore their boundless energy together. Erice can’t wait to look back on her match in a year and see more clearly the impact she is making in one young child’s life.
